Day 50!... and 51 and 52.
Three is a good number. I shouldn't beat myself up for all these triplet posts, even though I'd really like to have the discipline to blog every evening. Maybe one day.
Day 50. I'm thankful for dinner with the Iwinski Family.
Last week Deuce mentioned that he wanted to have Josiah over, and rather than just having a play date with the two of them, I talked to Mehgan and Joey, and we decided a family get together would be great. The kids ate separately, and then went off to play.
Justin bought some big filets from Ray's Butcher Shoppe and a new gigantic cast iron skillet to cook them. Holy moly that thing is heavy! I can't lift it with one hand! There was a slight mishap too. Justin used a tad too much butter in the pan, and it started smoking like crazy. We had to open a couple windows to let the smoke out.
Dinner was delicious! Besides the steaks, we had baked potatoes and steamed veggies. For dessert I made paleo chocolate mousse. We also had leftover lime bars that I'd made the night before.
During and after dinner we had great conversation with Joey and Mehgan, We talked about all sorts of things that were beneficial and a blessing to one another. They stayed until around 11, and I couldn't believe their three boys stayed awake. Three of our four zonked out well before they left. Margo was the last holdout.
Day 51. Girl Scout Cookies.
Need I say more?
Okay, I'll say a little more. I offered to have our house be the cookie pickup location, so Jess, who's the troop leader, came with her daughter Emily to drop them off yesterday afternoon. The dining room banquette was filled with boxes and boxes of cookies! While Deuce, Emily and Josie played, Jess and I started sorting some of the orders. She took the biggest two orders with her, and I took care of the others. It was a big task, but I enjoy that sort of thing.
And of course, we sampled some of the cookies.
Day 52. I'm grateful for an opportunity to build relationships with other parents from Parkside.
As I mentioned on "Day 51", our house was going to be where everyone would come to get their cookies. Rather than make it all business, I thought it would be nice for the girls to have a play date while the moms got to know each other a little better. Before this morning, I didn't know if anyone was coming. I got phone numbers from Jess, and while I was getting ready for church, started texting all the moms (there were five that I talked to, not including a few others that I knew wouldn't be there). I went from thinking no one was going to come to multiple families coming! Like I said, I thought it was going to be a mom and daughter thing, but I'm glad that three of the wives brought their husbands and their other kids.
Of course, all the kids went upstairs and (it sounded like they) had a blast. There was one other boy, not counting a teenager, who stayed close to his dad in the living room and a baby who was held by his mama) and, if my math is correct, eight girls. And as usual, a huge mess was made, which will get cleaned up tomorrow.
Anyway, it was really neat to be able to sit and talk and get to know the other parents. At first we talked about our house, since it is a pretty good conversation starter. I didn't give a grand tour, because Justin was sleeping upstairs and the basement wasn't guest ready. We also talked about living in Milwaukee, about Parkside and other school, education in general. It turns out that the others were looking for opportunities to get to know other parents, so I'm really glad that I arranged this little get together. Considering that we're going to be at Parkside for the long haul, we might as well make some friends!
The best part, is that I found out one of couples are born again Christians! God called them from Florida to Milwaukee. The husband, Dave, pastors a new church called The Upper Room that's pretty close to our house. And Angie, seems really nice and open to talking about the Lord. They have four kids, two boys (one that played with Deuce, and the baby) and two girls that are around Josie and Margo's ages. They seem like really nice people. I haven't told Justin yet, but Angie and I made arrangements to have their family come back for an evening in a few weeks!
