The F-Word, The Killing, and Other Gripes
Not too long ago, Justin suggested that I watch a show on Netflix called "The Killing." At first, I admit I was turned off to it, based solely on its name. I figured it would be a violent and gory show. Well, I started watching it, and really liked it!
It's a crime procedural drama, but unlike most other shows in that genre, there wasn't a new crime in every episode to be solved. Instead, there's a crime in the first episode, and then it took the next, like 25 shows to develop the characters - the victim's family, the detectives, and the suspects, and to solve the crime. There was a lot more emphasis on dealing with grief and stress of the victim's family that isn't normally addressed in shows where the attention is focused almost entirely on the ones solving the crime.
Anyway, it was really great the first two seasons. The third season was just okay. It was still interesting, but it wrapped up too quickly (in comparison to the first two seasons) after 10 episodes.
The first three seasons were on AMC, and rated TV14.
I just started watching the fourth season, which is now on Netflix only. It's considered a "Netflix Original." And since Netflix isn't bound by the rules of the FCC, they take it to a whole new level. Listen, I don't expect a bad guy to say, "gee whiz," but do we really need every character in the show to be "f" this and "f" that, and that's not to mention all the s-words, b-words, and a-words in the show now.
I've completely lost interest in watching it (which I know is a good thing), because listening to cursing doesn't appeal to me. It's frustrating, because the show was good without the cursing. The writing was good, the acting was good... Why add gratuitous swearing? I just don't get it.
And that goes for every other movie and TV show out there that adds all the unnecessary swearing, gore and nudity into a perfectly good script. Would people stop watching if the characters never said any of the f, s, b, and a words? Would people be offended if they didn't see a naked body in a movie? Would they be annoyed if there were a little less blood and guts?
There are a lot of shows that I've stopped watching and movies that I've chosen to skip because of the gratuitous swearing and sex. It's not like I am upset that I feel convicted by the Holy Spirit not to watch those things. Once I feel that it's wrong for me, I lose interest. It's just frustrating that it is so difficult to find quality television for an adult that doesn't compromise my walk with Christ.
I know that I don't NEED to watch TV or movies. I'll be okay without them. I'm more griping about the principle of it all. Why can't TV and movie writers come up with interesting and believable stories without the garbage? Is that too much to ask?
Okay, my next blog post won't be so complainy, I promise.
