School Starts Tomorrow!

School is finally here!

Deuce starts four year-old Kindergarten (K4) at Lincoln Elementary, and Josie starts Kindergarten curriculum at home tomorrow! I knew it would sneak up on me no matter how prepared I thought I'd be. And sure enough, I'm overwhelmed with everything that needs to get done before tomorrow afternoon.

That is one advantage. Deuce is in the afternoon class, so I have the morning to finish up anything I don't get to tonight. Every morning, I'm going to do house work while the kids play. Hopefully, if I get my act together, we'll do some learny stuff in the mornings too. Then right after an early lunch, I'll shuttle everyone down the street to Deuce's school and drop him off. Then I'll rush the girls home, put Margo down for a nap, and do homeschool lessons with Josie until it's time to pack everyone up, and go pick up Deuce at 2:50! At least that's how a normal day will go.

Tomorrow, Piper has a well child visit at 1:30, right smack dab in the middle of my homeschool time with Josie. Thankfully, Justin is able to get off work early, so he'll be able to pick up Deuce from school. Josie's lesson will still get interrupted, but at least we can go right back home and finish up the day's curriculum without worrying about making another trip to pick up Deuce.

I'm a little disappointed that the school room is incomplete, but I am excited for what it will soon look like! Being away for the weekend has made it a little difficult to get everything done. As soon as it's all finished, I'll make sure to take a picture and share it. In the interim, I guess we'll make the kitchen table work.

I'm looking forward to being Josie's teacher, and I think she's excited too. We are using My Father's World curriculum this year. There is a lot of phonics and pre-reading stuff in the curriculum, so I think Josie is a bit advanced. However, I've been tweaking it to make it work for us. If all goes as planned (it probably won't), we will be done with Kindergarten in April. And then, I think we'll start right away on first grade. But of course, I won't push her further/faster than she's comfortably able to go.

One thing I'm excited about is the memory verses that I'm going to have her learn that coincide with the units. The first unit is all about the Sun. The memory verse is ...Jesus said..."I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12. I typed out the verse several times, increasingly replacing words with blanks until there are more blanks than words. The goal is for her to be able to recite the whole verse before the next unit begins.

As much work as I have ahead of me to do (tonight and throughout the year), I am very thankful that I have the freedom to teach my children at home. I love that I can tweak my kids' education based on their personalities and skills, as well as our beliefs without fear.

Now with all that said, I need to get back to work!
