A Little More Patience Needed
So, yesterday was the second day of homeschooling, and I may need to adjust things a bit. Josie has a tendency to lose her cool when she feels that she can't do something. And then after a while, I start to lose my patience, causing both of us to be stressed out. I really need to find the balance between pushing Josie to excel and allowing her to go at her own pace.
The main source of frustration has been handwriting these last two days. Josie can write all of her letters for the most part, but when I asked her to practice a letter on handwriting paper, she couldn't do it. And she got increasingly flustered and frustrated when I had her keep trying. I ended up letting her practice with her finger in a tray of salt. She could form the letter (S is the letter of the week) with no problems until I drew a top line, a bottom line and a middle dotted line for her to write the letter on. Either the letter didn't come close to touching the lines appropriately (start at the top, curve to the middle, curve the opposite way to the bottom line) or the letter itself wasn't formed properly. Justin recommended that I start with one line for her to write above or below, and then I could add the other lines later. In the moment, I probably pushed her too much to try harder, but I'm definitely not okay with a quitter vibe and "I can't do it" attitude.
Another challenge was just the lack of respect. When I was talking, Josie would move around a lot and make goofy faces. So, that's something I'll have to work on. Again, I'll need to find a balance between having fun and being serious about school.
On a positive note, Josie has exceeded my expectations with her memory verse this week. The verse is ...Jesus...said, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life." John 8:12. I typed out the verse several times, increasingly replacing the words with blanks. The last time the verse looked like this:
Jesus said, "I am the ____ of the ______. _________ ___________ me will never ____ in __________ but will have the _____ of _____. John 8:12.
She read through it as if the words were still there the first time she saw it. Yesterday, she did it again with no trouble. AND just a few minutes ago, I said to Josie, "Jesus said...?" And she recited the whole verse including the reference! Maybe I should do that with everything I want her to remember. Haha
