Making the Most of Summer!! (Part Two)
I figured it might be easier/more enjoyable to read three shorter blog posts than one really long one, so here's part two of our summer so far.
Day 169. New sandals, Lindsay's bridal shower, and an evening with the Price family.
This was a pretty full day. While Justin went to his jiu jitsu class in the morning, I took the kids to Kohl's so Josie could get a new pair of sandals. Taking all the kids into a store is always an adventure!
After that, I got ready and went to Alan and Vicki's house for Lindsay's bridal shower. It was nice to chat with Alana, Jon (her fiance)'s sister, Jenni and his mom, as well as some of Lindsay's friends. Plus there was a ton of yummy food that I pigged out on.
I got home from the shower late in the afternoon, and almost immediately, we all packed up and went over to the Prices' house for the evening. The kids swam in their small backyard pool while the grownups talked. Then, Angie and I and Josie and Daniela made dinner together. We made chicken tenders and sweet potato coins, both recipes from Josie's Disney cookbook. And for dessert, the girls made parfaits with pudding, whipped cream and fruit. Justin and David ran up to the store for some more grownup and decadent desserts for us. Our families get along so well together. We love spending time with them!
Day 170. Father's Day!
I am thankful for my dad. I have so many great memories of Dad being... well, wonderful. Dad has always been a faithful and faith filled, loving, patient, supportive, gentle, strong, hard-working, fun, humorous, easy-going father. And I love him so much!
I am also thankful for the father that Justin has been to our kids. He isn't just like my dad, and that's okay. He is great in his own way, and I know that he loves our children and they love him a lot!
This Father's Day, we decided to have a family day at home instead of going to church. It was really nice not going anywhere. We got some stuff done around the house and just hung out.
Day 171. I am grateful for non-contagious and easy to treat fevers.
Over night Josie developed a pretty high fever - up to 103.3, which obviously was a little concerning. I was able to squeeze her in (actually Justin took her) at our doctor's office that afternoon. Turns out it was a late reaction to one of the vaccines she had gotten a few days prior. With the doctor's permission, I gave her an Advil, and her fever immediately went down.
Day 172. I'm thankful for backyard pool parties.
Today, Angie brought her three older kids over around 10 to play while she took baby Oliver grocery shopping. The kids spent some time in the pool out back, and then had lunch, and played until Angie came back around 2. Like I've said before, the kids all get along really well together.
Day 173. I love babysitting trade-offs.
I brought the kids over to Angie's house so the kids could play and I could get some stuff done around the house without interruptions. They were there from about 10-2, and I got a ton of purging and organizing done around the house. It felt so good to clear out some of the clutter!
Day 174 - Day 178. A long weekend in Illinois.
It's been a tradition for our family to visit Justin's family in Illinois the last weekend of June each summer. There is a festival called Heritage Days that goes on that weekend. Justin's Uncle Dick is in town from Las Vegas, and other family members come to visit too. Interestingly (or maybe not), we rarely go up to the festival. We just hang out at either his grandma and mom's house or his aunt's house. We ate a lot of junk food, read, watched movies, napped... It was a very relaxing weekend. Well, except for the drive there and back. That wasn't awesome.
Oh, another great thing was all the help we had with Carmen while we were gone! The first two nights, she stayed with our friends, Mike and Danielle, from church. Saturday night the Price family had her, and Jessica from church stayed overnight at our house to take care of her!
Day 179. I'm thankful for strawberry picking and strawberry shortcake with friends.
The kids and I went up to Barthel's fruit farm in Mequon to pick a bunch of strawberries with some friends and their kiddos. The little ones snacked on the berries, while the older ones either ran around or helped pick. Josie was an especially helpful strawberry picker. I bet she'll be a pro by next year!
We got there a little later than Marie, Bri, Ann, and Ally, so they were ready to leave before we were. But, my friend Sarah and two of her kids came to pick berries around the same time the others left, so we had another friend to hang out with for a little while.
After strawberry picking, we went home and got ready to have Angie and the kids (David was out of town for business) over for dinner and dessert. We had an easy pasta dish, garlic bread, and strawberry shortcake for dessert. It was my first time making real strawberry shortcake - the kind with the homemade biscuits - and I was really happy with how they turned out. And of course we used the fresh berries from Barthels fruit farm. The whipped cream came from a can from Aldi, however.
Day 180. I'm grateful for one last zoo day... at least for a while.
We went with Bri and her four kids and had a great time. It was a perfect day out, and really busy at the zoo. There were a bunch of Y camp kids there, so they definitely added to the crowds. The kids had fun running around and occasionally looking at animals, and Bri and I had a lovely time chatting. Before we left, the kids played on the playground, which is pretty neat. The slides are really tall! Anyway, it was a good day.
