A Week in May
Day 137. I'm grateful for a play date with my friend, Ally.
It was a pretty typical play date. The girls made a huge mess upstairs, while Ally and I sat and talked. I was supposed to do housework while she visited, but that of course didn't happen. It was way more enjoyable to just chat with her instead of try to do chores. After they left, then I worked on getting the house in order. Later in the afternoon, the kids helped me. Good thing!
Day 138. I'm thankful for Voxer conversations with Sarah.
We talk almost every day on Voxer, but since I can't think of much else that was interesting that day, I'll write about that. We both tend to be long-winded on Voxer, which is especially nice when you want someone to keep you company while you're washing dishes or folding laundry. And it's a great way to talk without being interrupted. Haha Anyway, my friendship with Sarah has definitely grown as a result of all the time we've spent chatting on Voxer.
Day 139. Popcorn and Coke.
That's what I was especially thankful for.
Okay, the truth is, when I don't write my blog on a daily basis (which I obviously haven't done in quite a while), I use clues to remind me what happened each day. I look at Instagram, texts, voxer, and my phone's photo album. Usually something will jog my memory. Sometimes there's hardly any information. On Wednesday, I took a picture of a bowl of popcorn and a McDonald's Coke. And that was basically it for clues. haha
Day 140. I'm thankful for the ability to adjust to life's little curveballs.
We had a big afternoon scheduled for Thursday. It was going to be Josie's last meeting in Daisies. Her bridging to Brownies (By the way, did I mention that I'm going to co-lead the Brownie troop next year with Angie? Yep.) ceremony was that afternoon. Afterward, we were going to go to the Prices' house so Josie and Deuce could play with Owen and Daniela. Then at 5:30, the kids had open house to show off all their artwork. Then I was going to drop off the kids at church, and Justin was going to meet me there with the two littles. I would then go home and get ready to host the MOBs meeting that night.
Instead, Josie threw up in the van on the way to school. Actually, she had told me her tummy hurt. Since she would have to miss lots of fun things if she didn't go to school, I wanted to make sure she was really sure. Justin had taken a couple days off work, so he stayed with the girls while I took Deuce to school. When I got back, I convinced Josie to try to go to school, albeit a little late. She said she felt better. And then a few minutes later... barf. So, we turned around and headed home. So, in the end, Justin picked up Deuce from school, there was no play date, only Justin and Deuce went to the open house and to church, and the MOBs meeting got moved to someone else's house, and I didn't get to go to it. I went from having one thing after another to do to basically nothing. And, other than Josie not feeling well, it was nice!
Day 141. I'm grateful for gardening with a friend.
Earlier in the week, Angie had suggested coming over to work on the garden. We had planned on meeting at Bluemel's for coffee (They have recently converted a large portion of their plant store into a gorgeous coffee shop that sells Collectivo coffee!) and then plant shopping. Her plans changed that morning, and I ended up going with just Margo. We got pastries and coffee - well she got ice water - and enjoyed a few minutes together. A short time later, my friend Crystal, who works there with her husband, John, came and sat down and chatted with me. It was really great to catch up a bit with her. I had given a list of fruits and veggies that I wanted to plant in the garden, which she had all set up for me. I got those, we looked at some other stuff and talked, I grabbed coffee for Justin, and we headed home.
Angie and her two littles, Savanna and Oliver, got to the house about an hour later. When she arrived, I had started pulling weeds in the front flower beds. We moved to the backyard, and first focused on a long, narrow flower bed by the fence on the east side of the yard. For whatever reason, there were a bunch of big stone blocks in the bed. We hauled those out of the way, tilled up the soil, and pulled weeds. Then I replaced some pretty lawn decorations that my mom had given me. We debated about what I should plant there, based on exposure to the sun. I think we're going to do something that only needs partial sun. Maybe hostas or lamb's ear.
We also pulled weeds by the side of the house, and started working on the garden itself. But the ground was really hard, which got us talking about renting a tiller. I had already done work, but the weeds were coming back, and there was a significant area that hadn't been touched yet. For $39, we could get a tiller for four hours, and easily take care of that whole space. Then we would cover it with a thick layer of mulch, before planting the veggies and fruit. By the way, I have tomatoes, peppers, green beans, butternut squash, zucchini, pickling cucumbers, and strawberries. Depending on space, I may go back for more.
We took a short lunch break, and later headed back outside, this time to the front yard. We finished weeding the flower bed to the right of the steps together. I started working on the left side, while she got ready to go. This is what it looked like before:
And here's the after:
As you can see, I magically transformed my adorable Piper into a yellow cup of ice water. And I pulled a lot of weeds! I do want more ground cover plants, and maybe some more color. Plus, mulch will make it look nicer. But all in all, I'm happy with all that we accomplished on Friday. It was so much more enjoyable having company while doing all that hard work.
Okay, it's almost midnight (on Sunday), and my battery is about to die. I have to finish blogging about the weekend tomorrow. But here's a sneak peak:
Day 142. New bikes, a dog walk, and a "clean" porch.
Day 143. Learning to ride a two-wheeler!
