Birthday Blog... A Few Days Late
My birthday was 6 days ago, and I'm just now sitting down to blog about it. I mean, it's not like it's the first time I've sat down, obviously. It's just that at the end of a (read: every) day, I find myself relaxing in a comfier place than at the kitchen table with my laptop.
Anyway, my birthday was actually a little more drawn out than usual, which was nice.
As I mentioned in the last blog, the kids and I visited my parents in Ohio the weekend before my birthday. My mom bought me some new pajamas (cute gray and blue polka dot pants and a blue shirt) that were sorely needed. I'm actually wearing them right now. She also got me some pretty silver statement jewelry. I'm usually not a jewelry kind of girl, but I want to be, so I need to figure out how to wear my new necklace and earrings without looking like I have no clue.
On Thursday morning, my actual birthday, the kids and I slept in (at least I'm pretty sure they slept in too. haha), and since I didn't feel like cooking breakfast (if I remember correctly, it's because I hadn't done the dishes from the night before and didn't want to add more to the pile), we went to Dunkin Donuts for a sugary birthday breakfast.
After that, we went to the Cudahy Family Library, where the kids played and I relaxed. I guess Piper mostly relaxed too.
Then it was straight to school to drop Deuce off at 4k (the donuts would have to hold him over since we didn't get lunch beforehand). And then, the girls and I went to Noodles for lunch.
A little later, after Justin got home from work, I went and got a pedicure - all by myself. I went with navy blue this time per Justin's request. I then rushed home to a birthday dinner prepared by my dear husband. He made (read: bought from Ray's butcher shop) chicken cordon bleu! It was quite tasty, and I definitely appreciate not having to cook on my birthday!
After dinner, I went birthday shopping with my lovely friend, Mo at Kohl's. The one thing I really wanted to buy was new boots. And if I bought new boots, I'd have to get skinny jeans or jeggings. I ended up getting boots, 2 pairs of jeggings (1 black and 1 navy), 3 shirts, and 2 camis. I don't think I missed anything. I don't know what I'd do without my stylish friends to guide me. haha
I went home and devoured a pint of Ben & Jerry's Everything But The... ice cream. Mmmm ice cream...
On Friday, I had a relaxing/productive day. I did normal housewifey/mommish things. But then Justin and I had plans for just the two of us. We were originally going to go to the shooting range and then get some ribs in Racine, but that didn't work out. So we went to a restaurant I've been wanting to go to for ages: Odd Duck in Bay View.
YUM.
It's a small plate farm to table restaurant with an ever-changing menu dependent on the availability of local ingredients. We shared: pork shoulder croquettes, Gouda stuffed, bacon wrapped dates, seared sea scallops, and cider braised pork cheeks. I also had curry roasted cauliflower, and Justin had sugar bee mushroom pozole. We both indulged in a delicious dessert: I had an apple pecan cake with maple cream, and Justin had coffee creme brulee. And as a bonus, I enjoyed a glass of Shiraz with my meal. It is very rare that I partake, but I decided my birthday was as good a day as any.
I highly recommend Odd Duck for a special occasion or even just a nice date. It is a bit pricy, especially if you're moo cows like we were. ;0)
You'd think that was the end of my birthday celebrations, but no!
This past Sunday my cousin Kathy came into town for some business, and we went out for a late lunch/early dinner at Collectivo to celebrate both of our birthdays. Her birthday is 2 weeks and 3 days after mine. It was really nice catching up and talking about future plans. Kathy and her husband, John are moving to Singapore for two years! After our meal out, we came back to the house to chat more, play/read with the kiddos, and make and eat paleo brownie balls.
Part of me still can't believe that I'm 35. Thirty-five. I'm 35 years old. I'm halfway to 70. Half of my lifetime ago, I was almost a senior in high school. The number 35 seems older than I feel though. To be honest, I have more confidence than I've ever had. I could probably list more things about myself (physical and not) than I like about myself than I could when I had far fewer "flaws" and pounds! I feel like I'm in the best years of my life. I know who I am, and I'm so blessed by my husband, my children, my family and my friends. Birthdays don't bother me any more than grey hairs do. I just pray that I have MANY more to celebrate with those that I love!
P.S. Wow. I really love food, huh.
