Apples!!

This afternoon the kids and I met up with my friend, Sarah, and four of her five kids for some apple picking fun! We went to Barthel's Farm in Mequon, a town about 30 minutes or so from Milwaukee. We had just been to the same farm a couple months before for strawberry picking.

We were originally going to go on Friday with a few other friends. Fridays are the best day for us to do fun activities since Deuce doesn't have school. However, the weather forecast says a really good chance of rain on Friday, and today was a perfect fall day - sunny and cool. We left right after Josie's Daisy meeting, stopped at Sarah's so she could follow us, and then headed to Mequon.

We got there around 5, which was a little later than we wanted, but no big deal. There were still a ton of apples to pick! Today we had the options of picking Cortland and Pippin apples. Sarah said that she had a lot of luck with Cortland apples the previous year, so we decided to stick with those.

With Piper on my person, Margo in the wagon (but not for long), and the kids running ahead, apple picking commenced! I had a large bag (cost $19) to fill, and fill it we did. The kids really seemed to enjoy plucking the apples off the trees, as well as finding them on the ground. They also enjoyed playing with their buddy, Carson!

However, they weren't the best at picking unblemished apples, as you can see by this ugly one that Josie is holding. 80P
This apple made it in the bag until I noticed it. Yuck!

I really think the kids had a good time, and if the bag hadn't gotten filled so fast (and if dinnertime wasn't closing in), I would've liked to stay longer. When our bags were practically overflowing, we went to pay for our apples. I was anxious to weigh them at home and see how much I got per pound.

Turns out I stuffed nearly 16 pounds of apples in that bag. I could've gotten more, but I feel pretty good about our haul. $1.20/lb for apples isn't too shabby, right?

Anyway, now I've got lots of peeling, coring, slicing and cooking to do! My plan is to make apple chips,

Okay I already made them. See?

Apple butter. Here's a sneak peak:

Apple slices (with skin), apple juice, apple cider vinegar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Cook in crockpot for 15 hours, and then blend.

I also have intentions to make apple coffeecake, apple crisp, and of course, applesauce! My goal is to make everything without sugar. We'll see how that goes. 80)
